Please read the below update concerning our district's response to the COVID-19 situation following the press release from Governor Kemp late yesterday.

Covid Update

3/12/2020

Governor Kemp held a news conference today in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Education. A summary of his comments and guidance to schools is below:

Local school systems have already implemented some limited closures in specific areas to deal with recent presumed positive and confirmed cases of COVID-19. During the press conference, Governor Kemp made it clear that day cares, schools, and school districts have the freedom to implement further closures as early as Friday, March 13, for the next two weeks.

"The Georgia Department of Education, University System of Georgia, Technical College System, and local school leaders have been invaluable partners to determine the best measures to protect students, teachers, and administrators," said Governor Kemp. "We believe in local control for all systems when it comes to making the best decisions for their communities. They have flexibility, and regardless of whether they stay open or decide to close, we will support their decision."

Dawson County Schools will provide an update to our families and students on 3/13/2020.

02/28/2020

At this time, there are no confirmed cases in Dawson County. We are currently following the lead of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH), the Dawson County Board of Health (FCBOH) as well as other local, state, and federal agencies to make sure we have the most up-to-date information available. This page has been established to provide these resources and communications from the district to our community members

In response to the CDC’s public comments, we wanted to provide information about our coronavirus (COVID-19) planning.

  • We are reinforcing the importance of healthy hygiene with our students and employees.
  • We have purchased and utilized the Victory Handheld Electrostatic Spray System that spays a disinfectant with an electromagnetic charge to prevent the spread of germs and viruses in our schools and on our buses.  Our staff has attended trainings on the use of this product.
  • Our school nursing staff provides detailed information to Principals and district staff on the number of students seen and the reasons each week.
  • Should a confirmed case of COVID-19 occur, we will immediately inform our school community.
  • DCS has a plan to address the potential impact of COVID-19, including a continuity of learning.
  • In the event of a school closing, we will utilize our online learning days to continue to provide instruction and support students.
  • We will monitor and adjust online learning as needed during the continuation of any school closings.
  • DCS will continue to monitor and make any necessary revisions to respond to COVID-19 scenarios as new information becomes available.

Dawson County Schools will take all necessary actions to keep schools open and operating while providing a clean and safe environment.  While the full impact of an outbreak cannot be predicted, planning for teaching and learning to continue will lessen the impact on our students, staff, facilities, and mission. The health and safety of our students and staff remains our top priority.

As a reminder, common cold and flu viruses are not unusual during the winter season. Precautions are recommended and we ask that everyone do his or her part to stay healthy: wash hands frequently, monitor your health, and stay home when ill.

What can my student and I do to stop the spread of COVID-19?

  • Keep children who are sick at home. Don’t send them to school.
  • Teach your children to wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
  • Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and immediately dispose of the tissue in a trashcan. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
  • Teach your children to stay at least three feet away from people who are sick.
  • People who are sick should stay home from work or school and stay away from other people until they are better.

What should I do if my child exhibits symptoms?

Contact your doctor, a local public health clinic, or the local board of health. The Georgia Department of Public Health is currently advising that individuals who have traveled from affected countries/areas in the past 14 days and have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing should seek medical care, and should contact their healthcare provider and inform them of their travel history before going in.

A list of current school closures is available
here. The Georgia Department of Education is following the direction of the Georgia Department of Public Health regarding school closures. We are also advising local school districts to follow the direction of their local board of health. At this time, the Georgia Department of Public Health has advised us that students who are not ill can safely attend schools.

What will the Georgia Department of Education do to help students continue learning if schools close?

We are advising school districts to develop a plan to continue student learning should they need to close, using resources such as study packets, cable access, virtual school/online classes, etc. GaDOE’s Office of Teaching and Learning has compiled virtual educational resources that will be provided to support schools’ efforts.Click here to access these resources; this page will be continually updated.
