What are the requirements for a healthy school meal?

The student breakfast meal offers an entre of whole grains or whole grains and protein source, 4 oz. of 10% juice, additional 1/2 cup service of fruit, and milk.  Based on preferences, students must select 3 of the meal components offered at breakfast.

The student lunch meal offers 5 meal components; an entre that includes a meat/meat alternate, whole grains, fruit, vegetable, and milk.  The meal is sold as a unit and students must select at least 3 of the meal components from the many choices offered, declining no more than 2 meal components.

Special Dietary Needs Procedure/Meal Accommodations

If accommodations are needed to support a student's unique dietary needs, the Dawson County School Nutrition Program is more than happy to provide meal accommodations for students with physician-documented food allergies, food intolerances, or texture modification needs.  According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Guidance on Meal Substitutions, "A participant whose handicap restricts his or her diet shall be provided substitutions in foods only when supported by a statement signed by a licensed physician."  We are unable to make meal accommodations for a student's religious, cultural, or personal preferences.  In order for accommodations to be made for students with food allergies or intolerances, we do ask that your student's physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner complete the Statement to Request Accommodations for Special Dietary Needs in the School Meal Programs form.  After submitting this form, the School Nurse or School Nutrition Program will reach out to confirm that adequate documentation is in place for your student to receive a Special Diet.  Next, our team will develop a nutritionally-sound menu that meets your student's unique needs.  You can obtain the form from any School Nurse or by clicking on the link below:

Please note that the School Nutrition Program requires an updated Statement to Request Accommodations for Special Dietary Needs in the School Meal Programs form to be completed each school year if meal accommodations are requested.  Because dietary needs change, the form from School Year 2023-2024 will not rollover to next school year.

For more information regarding Special Diets, please contact the School Nutrition Program at:  (706) 265-3246

Students who have a 504 plan or an IEP, and those plans address a food-related accommodation, will not need to complete the form.
